A whole year has come and gone since the very first time we hosted a Buy Nothing event in Kingston. The world has changed so much for us personally during that time, and the need to give back to our community feels more relevant than ever. The need to invest in alternatives to capitalism, to know our neighbors and to learn to rely on each other. The need to explore greener alternatives to holiday magic so that our children have many more holidays to come on this planet. (If they, and we, get so lucky whomp whomp).
These events have been immensely gratifying for many reasons:
-getting to share lunch with so many friends and neighbors
-sharing in each other’s excitement in finding “THE PERFECT THING”
– kids have almost burst from excitement with being able to take whatever they like. Before the holidays, it’s a great chance for them to “shop” for important people in their lives.
-a time to come together and connect with those doing great things in our community
-a chance to learn about and participate in mutual aid. Community resilience in the face of natural disasters and other unexpected upheavals (cough *fascism* cough) are directly related to us knowing and trusting each other to show up. Our community held us up when we lost our child earlier this year, and continue to do so. Nothing can come close to thank you for that, but we can try our best to show up for you for the rest of our lives.
